ORION | Challenges and aims

The Meuse is a river that flows through several countries, and its water is used for many activities, including drinking water, agriculture and leisure. To protect water quality and aquatic ecosystems, it is essential for countries to work together. The ORION project aims to strengthen cooperation between regions to manage water resources in a coherent and concerted manner.

The ORION project aims to develop assessment tools based on predictive modelling to better understand and manage water quality in a context of climate change.

The project builds on the success of the previous Interreg project, DIADeM (2017-2020). This aimed to diagnose water quality in the Meuse using an active biomonitoring approach involving the encagement of sentinel species. Find out more about DIADEM...

Building on these advances, the ORION project aims to develop a comprehensive approach to assessing and monitoring the quality of the Meuse waters. This includes taking account of chemical, microbiological and ecotoxicological pollutants. Using innovative methods and mathematical models, the project will help to predict pollution dynamics and propose solutions to protect natural resources.
